Effective Consumable Solutions urges the industry to ‘re-evaluate their ability to make an impact’ in response to Green Alliance poll.
Green Alliance’s recent report delves deep into public opinion regarding ‘throwaway culture’ which is becoming an even bigger issue in the UK.
The recent survey carried out by Green Alliance suggests that four in five British adults (83%) agree that the UK’s throwaway culture is a big problem, and agreed that there is a need to shift towards a society that uses resources more efficiently.
68% of those surveyed said that they would support changing how they live in order to achieve this shift.
Despite these figures suggesting that a large percentage of the UK population demand change and would be willing to support it, recycling rates, particularly within the print industry, are falling well below expectations;
Only an estimated 15% of the 65 million cartridges sold annually in the UK are recycled, with a significant number of the remaining 85% ending up in landfill, taking over 1,000 years to decompose, all the while releasing harmful toxins and damaging the surrounding environment.
Effective Consumable Solutions believe that many businesses within the industry are failing to recycle due to the perception that it is a costly solution to implement, however, ECS’s Managing Director, Chris Fink, suggests that the added value and potential benefits of recycling are being overlooked in place of perceived financial savings.

Fink continued “Despite the upfront cost of recycling, the added benefits of doing so outweigh any outgoing cost. Generating partnerships, increasing sales, gaining community support, retaining staff, improved recruitment of staff and enhancing brand reputation are all more likely to happen for companies who commit themselves to sustainability and meet the values of this new wave of consumers.”
