Project Genesius which includes representation from the Home Office, the Metropolitan Police, RSMG (Rubber Stamp Manufacturers Guild), BOSS Federation and a number of specialist engravers, foil, hologram and print machine manufacturers have been working together since 2006 to prevent fraudsters using legitimate companies to provide products and services which can be used to produce fraudulent identity documents including, passports, driving licences, visas and other documents.

As a result of this ongoing project a bill has recently been passed in parliament which will be used to prosecute against criminal and terrorism activities.

The Specialist Printing Equipment and Materials (Offences) bill makes it illegal for any company to knowingly supply material, product or machines that will be used for fraudulent activity.

Rebecca Whitfield of the Home Office stated that this law was the only Home Office sponsored piece of legislation that had been passed by parliament in recent memory.David Amess MP said that it had gained all party support and in looking at the content and purpose of the bill there had been surprise that there was no legislation in existence that covered this issue. He said that the speed of the bill through parliament was a testimony to its importance and the support from all parties for this legislation.

This is a great example of how a partnership approach involving Politicians, the Home Office, the Metropolitan Police and private companies and federations can implement laws to prevent terrorism and fraud.
