BOSS Board Member Philip Beer is embarking on…….the London marathon for a great cause ICR.

World’s fastest exercise book record attempt at London Marathon

  • Philip Beer plans to run the London Marathon on 2nd October in an exercise book mascot costume to raise money for cancer charity ICR in memory of a colleague
  • He is attempting to secure a world record for “Fastest marathon dressed as a book”

On October 2nd an attempt will be made to secure a world record for ‘fastest marathon dressed as a book (male)’ by Philip Beer. Managing Director of Suffolk based company Hamelin Brands UK Ltd., this attempt aims to raise funds for the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR).

The drive for the attempt comes following the loss of a colleague, Eddie Sampson, to cancer last year on the 28th July. The costume has been named in memory of Eddie as you will be able to see in our photos.

Philip is a seasoned runner and has run marathons in the past, but this will be the first time he has attempted a marathon in costume – let alone one of this size and bulk. The costume means Philip will face more wind resistance, be hotter, be heaver and altogether more uncomfortable for an expected around 5 hours of gruelling running.

The inspiration for the costume comes from the fact that Hamelin Brands is Europe’s largest supplier of Exercise books. With an exercise book mascot costume since pre-lockdown, we had planned to use this at first for the attempt, but the costume was so ill suited to running, that we had to go back to Mascots Inc – the makers of the first costume, and ask for them for help in creating a costume that while still challenging, at least made the attempt a possibility.

Given the scale of the challenge and the world record attempt, Philip is hoping to break all previous fundraising records set by Hamelin.
