Pulp prices
After erosions in other parts of the world, the price for softwood pulp started decreasing in Europe in November. This is partly due to a slight improvement of availabilities. The global logistics situation does not show signs of improvement. In addition to current problems of pulp availability, the European pulp market will be impacted by UPM 5-week strike in Finland as the pulp business unit is striking.

Graphic paper prices
Graphic paper prices remained flat in December in all parts of Europe. Newsprint is still difficult to find and buyers are trying to source paper from Russian producers. For coated and uncoated woodfree paper, producers were seeking further increases for January deliveries because of increasing transport and logistic costs. Several graphic paper grades will also be impacted by the UPM strike of January 2022 in Finland. Striking mills produce SC paper, coated mechanical reels, coated woodfree, uncoated woodfree and speciality paper.

Recovered paper
November and December registered a first round of price drops. The downward trend is attributed to improved collection volumes and rising inventories on the supply and demand sides. The limited exports increase the volumes on domestic markets in Europe. New lockdown measures in parts of Europe and the tight transport situation threaten further price decreases.
