Environmental Performance Indicators (EPIs) / Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are used for analysing business performance through the benchmarking process. Environmental KPIs, or Environmental Performance Indicators EPI’s, are wide ranging and may include such things as energy consumed per unit produced or weight of product produced per weight of waste produced in a process. The KPIs are measured against a benchmark that is usually set at the level of the target or optimum performance/accepted best practice. Calculating KPIs over time and utilising them via the benchmarking process allows for environmental performance to be tracked so that current performance can be monitored, realistic improvement targets can be set and the success of implemented initiatives can be evaluated.
