Effluent (Liquid Waste)

Any effluent that is discharged from a business, trade or industrial premises is termed ‘trade effluent’ with the exception of a) uncontaminated surface water i.e. clean rainwater or b) domestic sewage.

Trade effluent includes such things as:

     -     waste oils and chemicals
     -     liquid process wastes
     -     detergents

There is legislation regarding what may be released as effluent and special permits or licences may be required for the release of certain controlled substances.

In the printing sector discharged process water will most likely make up the majority of effluent depending upon the type of printing and the processes involved.

If you have any queries or would like further information on issues relating to effluent and its regulation it is advisable to contact DEFRA, the Environment Agency or your local authority.
